Tom, some of that writing may just be graffiti (often a crew-member will "tag" his name or nickname and the ship he is from), but much of it is painted there as an aid in docking. A vertical line, labled with the ship's name, shows where the ship's bow or stern should be to position her properly for loading. As far as I know, this is still being done.
