I'm sure it was more than a spot weld, there is a lot of force on the propeller when it is moving through the water especially when it is just wind milling. There is probably more to it than just cutting it also. Where the prop shaft comes out of the hull, most likely has to be cut carefully since it holds bearings and the seal. Just a guess though.
