Bill, do you mean the turbines that are powered directly by the burned fuel (I believe they power the "Arleigh Burke" class destroyers). These are gas turbines. They operate much like a jet engine. Although they provide very quick start-ups and huge amounts of horsepower for their size, they are expensive fuel hogs and require high-priced fuel. That is why only naval ships use them. They provide the fast acceleration and power desired in naval ships, and since they are government funded defense ships - price is not a issue. They are far too costly to operate to be used on Lake ships.
