If you are going to be an Officer, then I would think you will be a cadet first, is this right?. I doubt the deck Officers make you spot without prior knowledge, therefore if you are a cadet they will assign you to a mate who will show you what is required, this is not a case of being green, its called "learning the ropes", I will tell you one terminolgy when spotting, when the ships starts rubbing the lock wall say "Right Up", the Captain will know what that means.
