Bill, One way to not look very "Green" is to know your ship and the lock. I have found that some of the information volunteered on this site is by very unknowledgeable people. The size of the lock is in the coast pilot the ship dimensions are on the certificate. The locks require that someone is in visual contact with the line handlers. This is the reason for the mate aft on a forward pilot house ship. The line handlers will spot the ship for the lowering or raising. The Capt. will let you know which side he needs distances on. Most likely this will be the closest point. Knowing the size of the ship and the size of the lock will help you from making the rookie mistake of saying that you are 10' off of the lock wall when the ship is 75' and the lock is only 80'. Try to think of what the captain would want to know and be ready to give it to him. I have found that some captains want you on one side and others want you to go over to the other side as they leave the lock. Every captain needs to know when he is clear of the center pier, When the lines are on and when they are clear, and anything that the line handlers tell you.
