Well, the captain needs to know how far 'clear of the corner' the ship is, and on an aft end ship then the point at which the bow has passed the corner of the dock/lock wall. This is when you are approaching the lock wall, when the bow is passed the end of the wall, then you need to know how far away the ship is from the wall, you can tell by the spots if the ship is coming in quickly or slowly. Once you're 'on the wall' then normally they'll only spot again if the boat starts to come away from the wall, this cuts down on unnecessary chatter. At the stern, once the ship is 'on the wall' you need to know when the stern breaks the suction and starts to come away from the wall so that you can start to line up the lock. Each lock and dock is different so the spots will vary a little from lock to lock and dock to dock but that's the gist of it.
