VHF radio is still used in ship to ship communications. Also ship to shore such as Soo Traffic and Sarnia Traffic. Instead of whistle signals for passing and meeting s in the older days, most ships use the VHF to make meeting arrangements. The initial call is made on channel 16, then when contact has been established they switch to channel 8 or another working channel for more detailed conversation. USCG Notice to Mariners are also broadcast on VHF with the initial call going out on 16 and then the broadcast of info made on 21 or 22.
