The International ShipMasters Association put out an annual directory dating to approximately 1900. The organization was officially organized in 1886 but I don't know when they published their first directory. However, the limitation of this directory is that it only lists their members (not all of whom are Captains)and does not identify the boat the individual is assigned to or even the fleet he works for. You are probably thinking of the "Great Lakes Red Book" that was published annually from 1899 until 1995. This pocket book listed the Captain and Chief Engineer assigned to each boat at the beginning of the season. The limitation of these books is that the fleets are listed alphabetically and the boats are listed alphabetically within each fleet. However, the Captains and Chiefs are not cross indexed so you can not look up a specific individual. Also, a "Lynn's Directory" and "Green's Marine Directory" listed Captains and Chief Engineers assigned to each boat but these books ceased publication sometime around the 1920's. More recently, "Lake Boats", published by Fresh Water Press, listed captains and Chief Engineers on each boat but this publication apparently ceased operation in 2007.
