The tiller would be hooked up and used only as a last resort. The Irvin used her electrical steering system out on the lake because of the "Iron Mike" auto steering. In the rivers the Hydraulic steering system because it gave a better feel of the boat. If both of those systems were out it would be an emergency and any way to steer would be implemented to get to a safe anchorage or a tug to assist.
