You don't need the TWIC just yet. I have heard that it's possible to get one but I haven't met anyone with one yet - and I just got off an ocean ship. Entry level jobs generally do NOT require an STCW certificate since you will not be a watch stander. Some companies prefer that you have it but it is not necessary. With the Lakes shutting down for the winter you can easily get an entry-level job in the Gulf of Mexico or an inland tug/barge job. Military Sealift Command has jobs too. Do a Google search for their website. You can sign up with Seafarer's International Union and go to their school in Maryland for a few weeks. They then help you get that first job. Otherwise start on the Lakes until you get an AB or QMED endorsement then switch to bigger and easier dollars by working on ocean ships.
