Iron Ore is much more dense than Coal. Taconite is one of the most dense cargo's a ship will carry. The average density of coal is 47 #/C.F. and the average density of Taconite is 103 #/C.F. Mesabi Iron Ore averages 160 #/C.F. Usually a ship carrying Coal will fill up every hatch all the way and a ship carrying taconite will only partially fill up each hatch or it may even skip hatches.
