A lot of factors are involved. Whether light or loaded, destination, type of cargo, size and age of the ship. The winds are forecast to be west to northwest so many ships will opt for the north shore route behind Isle Royale to catch a lee shore and reduced wind and waves. Many of the older boats will seek anchorage in Whitefish Bay if upbound or remain in port if downbound. Duluth/Superior harbors provide a large anchorage if that is the loading port. The St.Mary's River also has many spots to swing on the hook if needed. I sailed with many Captains that held to the belief that cargo can't be delivered with a hook down and though taking precautions would venture out into wind and wave conditions like this. Knowing the capabilities of ones ship is the key.
