Looking at the "classic" lakers, can someone familiar with ship construction explain why (given similar exterior dimensions) there is apparently a significant difference in the cubic capacity of US-built "730s" (such as the Ryerson) and their Canadian counterparts? I know that capacity for grain cargoes was a priority for Canadian vessels and not for US boats built for captive fleets, but what are the actual structural differences? Larger ballast tanks? Are machinery/bunker spaces on US boats larger?
