Rich, The best locations for ship watching in the Calumet River area would be Calumet Park at the eastern end of 95th street where you can see the whole lake and any traffic coming into or from the Calumet area or Indiana Harbor. After that its driving over the Ewing Ave, 95th, 100th and 106th street bridges to check on movements in the river or vessels docked nearby which occurs especially at 106th street. The Torrance Ave. bridge only goes up for the cement boats and the occasional tanker and Lake Calumet is extremely hard to get into. The bridges do have locations to park nearby although I consider the 95th street bridge to be the best in terms of safety and there is a fast food fish shop on the approach. The northwest and southeast corners are best for photograpy with the other two corners full of fencing and trees if I remember correctly. In downtown Chicago just pick a spot along the Chicago River especially from Michigan Ave. to just east of the Lake Shore Drive bridge and you will see a lot of traffic with pleasure boats and excursion boats coming and going especially on weekends. Hope this helps, Jim Bartke
