I'm no expert, but here are some differences I have inferred or been told about over the years: The Sturgeon Bay conversions do not include a spar deck trunk extension. Ship's converted at other yards that do have this extension recover some of the volumetric capacity lost to the conversion. The SB conversions may have avoided this feature through internal construction differences, or may simply have decided to take the hit because ON was carrying ore in these ships at that time. A second difference is that the Sturgeon Bay conversions do not have topside diesel generators in the unloading structures to provide the unloading equipment with power. I've been told that Sturgeon Bay provided the extra power required with turbine generators in the engine room. Hope others can add to this...
