As a resident of both NOLA and Houston, I can say that both cities offer good boatwatching oopportunities -- it has taken me a long time to not call the ships we see down here "salties" anymore. In New Orleans, the Riverwalk is open, accessible, and is a great public parkway along the Mississippi River between the Twin Span bridges and Algiers Point (similar to Collision Bend on the Cuyahoga, this is where the BRIGHTFIELD lost it and hit the Riverwalk). There are a good assortment of tankers, bulkers, towboats/barges, and cruise ships very visible in this narrow stretch of the River. You may also want to stay at several of the hotels that line this part of the River, including a Hilton and Wyndam. For Houston, given the number of private petrochemical docks and the security confines of the Houston Ship Channel, your best bet is to schedule a cruise of the Houston Ship Channel aboard the Port of Houston Authority's tour boat "SAM HOUSTON" - I believe it is free and can be booked through the Port Authority's website. Have a good time down here!
