You can see a large variety of tanker ships and barges from the Moonwalk in the French Quarter. Just go to Decatur and when you see Cafe Du Monde turn left in Jackson square. Park right on the Moon walk and every few minutes you will see one ship or another cruising along. I have a variety of photos and videos from that perch.
