Mike, As on many salties and on sister-ships Birchglen and Spruceglen, the VP's hatches are on rails and they hinge and fold upright when open. To demonstrate, open a hardback book face-down on a flat surface, so you're looking down on the front and back covers spread open. This is what the hatch cover would be like in the closed position. Now steady the right edge of the book and push the left edge towards it, so the spine rises up in the middle and the book closes perpendicular to the surface. That's how the hatch covers stand upright when open. I hope this helps. This photo in the fleet gallery may also help: http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/thumbb/voypioneer111-20-06gw.jpg
