I'll just throw some more tonnage in to the discussion. Short and long tons are measures of weight; and are not the same as gross or net registered tons. The (gross or net) registered tonnage is a measure of volume, generally the interior volume of the ship. An analogy I use to demonstrate the difference between weight and volume tons is a gallon of water measured in fluid ounces and avoirdupois ounces. A gallon of water contains 128 fluid ounces by volume. That same gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, or 133.4 avoirdupouis ounces (8.34x16=133.4).
