On the Canadian side, most cargo tonnages are now expressed in metric tons. This makes it much easier when dealing with US and Canadian Customs electronic reporting requirements. Adds a degree of consistency. Traditionally on the US side, it seems that coal was in short tons, ores in long tons and grains in bushels (and equivalent pounds). Using the metric system just makes things easier for those of us in the business. When you say so-many tons, they know exactly what you mean. US ports seem to be coming around to using the metric system slowly. Rgds
