So far you don't see the kind of barge-swapping happening on the Lakes with the large ship-style barges that you do on say the Mississippi River, where a tug will swap empty barges for loaded ones and continue on her way. It does happen with some of the smaller tug-barge operations out there though, and it happens with some of the larger ATBs out here on the coast too. There has been some longer-term swapping with some of the converted lakers though. For example the Joyce L. VanEnkevort was originally paired with the Pathfinder before the Dorothy Ann and the Great Lakes Trader were built. Or how about the Olive L. Moore - over the years she has been paired with Wiltranco I, Buckeye (the 1910 crane ship), McKee Sons, and the Lewis J. Kuber.
