The visor which we called apron, help to keep the sun and rain from entering the front window. All the older ships that I have sailed had the apron plus a three sided glass that fits into the front window to help keep the wind and rain from blowing in on the pilot. I believe the bulwark above the apron-visor were fitted on a few ships to help keep the navigation equipment from the weather
