In addition to quicker unloading times the self-unloaders usually make the trip back up loaded. Those years I worked for ASC we generally didn't head back up the lake without a cargo. But that's more of a difference in the company...ASC is a shipping company, whereas, some of the other fleets (Cliffs, Ford...) were in place to haul cargo specifically for the company they represented...so dead-heading back up the lake was a way of life back then.
