Can't speak to the SHERWIN specifically, but turbine drive ships use an "astern element" that is housed in the low pressure turbine casing that is designed specifically for astern operation. To reverse, the engineer simply shuts the ahead throttle (which is admitting steam to the high pressure turbine) and then opens the astern throttle which applies steam to the astern elements (sometimes there is a "guard valve" that is opened first). The astern elements then apply reverse torque to the entire drive train, including the propeller. I have included a link to the builders plate for the low pressure turbine on the MICHIPICOTEN. As you will note in the link, the astern elements do not provide the same horsepower or speed as when going ahead. There are a lot of different ways to put a turbine plant together, but it always works somthing like this. http://www.boatnerd.com/news/newpictures03/michip2003_0518EG.jpg
