The AAA's (Anderson ect) tube steel booms use hydraulics to lift (luff) and pivot (slew) the boom where the Munson's angle iron style boom is a "cable swinger" or has a cable system similar to the McKee Sons, and Saginaw. A set of cables lifts the boom and a set of cables on either side of the boom swing it to port or starboard witch a system of wenches. It is a complicated set up and can be dangerous if not operated properly. The Munson was built as a self-unloader in the 1950's and at the time that was the only real set up. You can see it was used on the other Manitowoc new builds of the time Sara Spencer, Saginaw and Detroit Edison. Also the ships converted in the late 50's and early 60's usually got a cable boom. It wasn’t until the conversions of the Nicolet and Joseph H. Frantz (both in 1964-1965) that you saw the hydraulic booms. Brian
