Marc Vander Meulen is correct it was the WG Mather. The incident began when a saltie forced the Mather out of the channel and struck bottom. The Mather actually made it into Lake Huron and soon discovered that the pumps was not able to stay even with incoming water and the decision was made to turn her around and head for the Valley Camp Coal dock. As luck would have it, the Mather would not make it to the dock, so the next best idea was to run her into shallow water (19') off of Frying Pan Island. The next day her iron ore was transfered to the R. H. Reiss and the Mather then proceeded to Sturgeon Bay, Bay Shipbuilding for extensive repairs.
