Spreying the deck prevents 'hogging'. The deck is exposed to the sun and not the plates in the water which maakes the ship have a crooked back. Stern and Bow can become lower in the water than the middle of the ship and make the ship ground in certain areas (As I was told). Could be the ship being straight helps consumption. I dunno
