There was a recent docmuentary on TLC or Discovery about building a new cruise ship. It has azipods aft, and 3 or 4 bow thrusters in a row, with power doors to fair over the tunnels when not in use. The door mechanism failed on the sea trials, causing a door to be blown off by the thruster, and causing substantial delay to the trials. If they were willing to add the complexity and reliability problems of doors on the tunnels, perhaps the tunnels do have an effect at higher speeds.
