There were 7 Wind class Icebreakers built, Eastwind, Westwind, Southwind, and Northwind (1st) were delivered to the Coast Guard. The Northwind (1), Southwind, and Westwind were transfered to Russia for 4 years. After the war a Northwind (2) and USN Burton Island, and USN Edisto were completed. Of the 3 Russian returnees Northwind (1) became USN Staten Island, Southwind became USN Atka, and Westwind returned to USCG. in the 1970s the USN Atka was returned to the Coast Guard and resumed her original name.
