The Canadian straight-deckers that unload at South Lake Michigan mills are bringing in taconite pellets from Quebec/Labrador mines or iron ore products imported from overseas and put aboard the lakers at Quebec City. These cargos are carried as a backhaul to the grain runs that the straight deckers make from Great Lakes loading ports to St. Lawrence transshipment ports. The Ryerson has too small a cubic capacity (and I believe the wrong cargo hold design) to competitively carry grain, so it's not feasible (or necessary) to run it on the seaway when it would be empty half the time. The Sherwin is too long to transit the Seaway in the first place.
