The Eastwind, Westwind, Northwind, and Southwind were all commissioned into service as CG Cutters, not the Navy. The Eastwind was the only one of the 4 Wind-Class breakers built for CG that remained with the CG. The Southwind served with the Russian Merchant Marine for four and one-half years. It was returned 12-28-49. Northwind ans Westwind served in the Soviet Navy. Turned over to US Navy 12-19-51. The Eastwind had a distinguished military career. She had the distinction of capturing the only Germain surface vessel taken at sea by American forces during WW-2. I had the honor of sevring aboard the Eastwind for four and one -half years. I made four trips to the Antarctic and one trip North.
