The Mackinaw was a one of a kind. The Wind Class were 269 feet, narrower and had one more deck, and a deeper draft. The only thing that the Winds and Mackinaw have in common was the engineering plant. Southwind and later Westwind were both homeported in Milwaukee during the 70's and early 80's. They were used for Lake icebreaking in the winter and were sent the Artic East in the summer. This proved very hard on the crews and the vessels were sent to the east coast. Southwind was sold for scrap in the mid 70's and Westwind after being damaged in the Antartic in the mid 80's was scrapped.
