Quite some time back, Transport Canada made some changes to the harbour. The south side of the Maitland River had an extension put in place, infilling took place to the south of the river (north and west of Sifto Salt) and a new wharf was constructed for ships to lay at but no loading facility. Hence the ship would back to the west, then south and then come in to the original harbour between the north and south piers while still being inside the off lying breakwalls. Kind of difficult to describe, a sketch map would help, but if you are familiar with the harbour you will get the gist of what I am saying. I hope.
