To research better need to know what is known. i.e. Name of ship served on, fleet he worked for, years served, the fact he was slinging coal means its been awhile. Where was he? Did he sail on a ship on a particular route or with a particular cargo. Colours;in the picture, on the stack, the ship, service in merchant marine, full name, licenses, military duty, obituary if deceased. If you know or can find this kind of stuff the search may be more specific. Can the photo be shown on the web?
