The Erie Canal is still operational, and used by smaller craft. It's T shaped, connects to Lake Erie at Buffalo, Lake Ontario at Oswego, and the Hudson River at Troy. The west end has apparently been neglected, reportedly Peckinpaugh had a tough time getting through, and the Emery tow decided to go via the Welland and Oswego. It was reported recently (I forget where I saw it) that they have ordered a new dredge to get it cleaned up.
