Generally speaking the ports that ships on-load at can tell you what they are carrying. Look in the back of "Know Your Ships" book for a summary of them. Some carriers are dedicated to one cargo. i.e. Inland Lakes or Lafarge are cement carriers. There are many examples. Remember that if I as a skipper come to Toledo with steel I'm going out with coal if I can. (Have to pay the bills) Need more...ask.
