If I remember correctly, it was an old U.S. Coast Guard 36' self-righting motor life boat. The design first appeared in the 1930s, although I'm not sure how old the one in Canal Park was. The current outdoor display, the tug Bayfield, was installed in 1998. This picture was taken some time after 1987, since the piers in the photo are the rebuilt versions that have existed since that year.
