The Incan Superior ended Lake Superior operations due to an inappropriately applied U.S. Federal tax on her operation, which raised her freight rates enough so that competing rail routes (CN) could lower their rates and undercut the railferry service. If fuel prices continue to rise like they are, I wouldn't be surprised to see a truck (and maybe rail) ferry operating the Duluth-Thunder Bay route again by the middle of the next decade.
