The year 1950 marked the centennial of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. To mark the event, 1850 CLEVELAND CLIFFS 1950 was painted on the sides of each boat along with a "C" in a diamond between Cleveland and CLiffs. Until that year, there was no company name on the sides of the boats. The following year, both 1850 and 1950 were removed leaving only Cleveland Cliffs. In 1950 wWe were at the entry in Duluth when my dad brought the Pioneer in and heard a woman exclaim "Heavens! That boat is 100 years old!" Still, it isinteresting how many people mistook the company name to be the name of the boat.
