Yes, a whaleback steamer named the "Joseph L. Colby" was launched at Superior in 1890. She was taken out to the deep sea later on, but had her name changed to "Bay State" in 1905. She made it back to the lakes where she worked as a sand sucker, being scrapped on the Calumet River in 1935. There's some great photos of the whaleback being broken up at the Milwaukee Public Library archives, if my memory serves me right. So...I wonder what whaleback your article/book was talking about?
