If I recall the story correctly, the Our Son was essentially at the mercy of the storm and was doomed. Taking on water and foundering rapidly, she was flying the American Flag upside down which is a distress signal. Seeing this signal, a steamer in the area made valiant rescue attempt by bringing thier vessel as close as they could to the Our Son in order to rescue the crew of the doomed schooner. This is where its gets foggy to me, I don't recall how the crew was trasferred from the Our Son. Whether they jumped, used a line,..or what,..I don't recall.
