Yes Catherine, you did see something that is not too common today. In 1956 (my fist year of sailing) the tugs were on strike and there were maybe one or two boats that had bow thrusters or C/P screws. The only way to control the bow was with the anchor and it is a lost art. We went up to, I belive, 17th St. in Milwaukee with no tug and expected to turn around in the turning basin. We were too long and had to back all the way back out to the harbor. No bow thruster, no tug and no C/P prop. Now that was some ship handling...
