In the early 1950's, the tugs ATOMIC and PATRICIA McQUEEN used to tow the barge T.F. NEWMAN in a coal run between Toledo and Chatham. McQueen Marine had contracts to supply coal (typical load was 1,100 tons) to Wallaceburg, Chatham, Kingsville & LaSalle from Valley Camp coal at Toledo. Navigating in the narrow rivers was tricky at best and the steering gear of the NEWMAN had a mind of its own with the result that the bridges at Chatham and Wallaceburg received some pretty good licks from time to time...Hope this info helps...thanks Al.
