The USMC built the boats and essentially sold them to the companies. The price for each Maritimer was older boats, with a tonnage equivalent to the tonnage of the new Maritimer, plus cash. In effect, the USMC subsidized the cost of new construction of the Maritimers for the 9 Great Lakes shipping companies that participated in the program. The older boats became the property of the USMC. However, because of the need to ship large quantities of materials during the war, the USMC leased the old boats back to the original company. Most of the older boats were permanently laid up in 1945 - 1946 after the war ended but a couple were operated until 1952-1953. According to "Ahoy and Farewell II", the number of older boats traded in during this program was 36.
