W.E. Fitzgerald was Edmunds father and president of Milwaukee Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. Edmund, while president of Northwestern Mutual had the Fitzgerald built as a company investment and his hobby, then bare boat chartered it to Columbia. The ship W.E. Fitzgerald was built by Captain Denis Sullivan and named after W.E's death from a gas explosion at his vacation home on Lake Nagawicka outside of Milwaukee in 1901.
