The Canada Shipping Act like the Jones Act restricts shipping between Canadian ports to Canadian registered ships with Canadian crews. (With exceptions if no Canadian ship is available for a particular voyage.) Unlike the Jones Act it does not restrict this to ships built in Canada. As long as the operating company pays the duty required to import the ship it can register it in Canada. Even lakers have been built in overseas shipyards then registered Canadian.
