Quoted from introduction of Cdr. William Diehl, USCG, Captain of the Port of Duluth, Gales of November 2001, Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center. (Search Tanker Jupiter) "On 16 September, 1990, the 392 -foot long tank ship JUPITER was moored at the Total Petroleum Terminal on the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan, discharging a cargo of unleaded gasoline. While the JUPTIER lay moored at the terminal, the 635-foot long freight ship BUFFALO entered the Saginaw River en route to a bulk materials facility up river. As the BUFFALO passed the JUPITER, the tank ship's stern broke away from its berth and swung out into the river, rupturing the discharge hose on the pier - gasoline went everywhere! The JUPITER exploded, burned and obstructed the river for 36 days. Significant losses stemming from the casualty included: a seaman's life; the vessel and cargo valued at $10,000,000 and 40,000 fish killed by the explosions shock waves. The ship's owner spent millions responding to the causality. CDR. Diehl participated in the response to this disaster...."
