Elaine, The Marine radio frequencies for the great lakes are all VHF. You can get a marine portavble or a portable scanner. It must cober the VHf High band from 140 to 174 mhZ. The marine freqeuencies are in the 156 to 157 and 161 to 162 MHz area. Once you get the radio I can give you a great deal of channels to program. I recommend that you put an outside antenna up at home. Put it as high as possible and you will get good range. Ron Walsh, VE3GO
