First off the EMD's are two cycle engines, the rest not sure of. I sailed two boats with Colts and they seem more temperamental that the others for sure. It wasn't unusual for one to be out of line for a while here and there. EMD's have had a reputation for being reliable and easy to repair. Most of the emd's used on the lakes are 645 models, ealier models especially on tugs are 567's and upgrades to 645's. Locomotives are still around with 567's the newer with 600, 700, and later series. GE uses there own make and design and are four cycle as opposed to EMD two cycle. Cats are four cycle engines also. ALCOs are still around in both Marine and locomotives, but the locomotive program ended in the early 70's, but the engines were still being built far longer for stationary and marine use.
