I believe the Crapo was fitted with Dayton underfeed stokers around 1962. She remained a coal burner until 1994, and was converted to burn oil over the winter of 1994-95. At that time she was the last coal-fired freighter. She was also briefly the last coal burner before LMC picked up the Badger. The Chief was the last hand-bomber. When she was retired in 1984, the Merle M. McCurdy, William A. McGonagle, Kinsman Independent (2) and Irvin L. Clymer were also active and coal fired - all of them had mechanical stokers.
